The Indescribable God
How can we describe the indescribable? How can we comprehend the incomprehensible? As we usually discover, scripture points us in the right direction, guiding our human quest to know and understand more.
The Old Testament tradition is full of images, metaphors, and similes – all as descriptions of the indescribable, all encouraging us to comprehend the incomprehensible, none other than the Creator God. The metaphors and images range from God as the shepherd, as a parent, as a spouse, and as the judge. Likewise, the people of God are described as sheep, as a spouse, as children, and even as enemies.
Jesus himself loved to fire people’s imaginations as they wondered about life and God. “I am the Good Shepherd.” “I am the door.” “The Kingdom of God is like a treasure, a bride, a seed, leaven, a field…” and the list goes on and on.
Rooted & Built on His Foundation
The Apostle Paul writes to the churches in the Lycus River Valley, seeking words to encourage and guide – firing their imaginations for faithful living as followers of Jesus. “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow Him. Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6-7, NLT).
The metaphors abound. Be rooted like a tree sending down strong roots into the soil, built up as a house takes shape during the construction process, and growing strong (“established”) – a legal term in the ancient world that often referred to a ratified contract and made binding.
How would you describe you current relationship, your journey with God? What’s the image that captures where you are now but encourages where you want to be soon? This Sunday, we “Rediscover Jesus” as we explore Colossians 2:1-7. So come prepared to have your imaginations fired up for the indescribable.
