As a church, we’re taking time these next six weeks to memorize Scripture together, starting with Psalm 1. Memorizing the Bible is more than a discipline; it’s a way of letting God’s truth take root in us so that it can shape our minds, strengthen our faith, and guide us in everyday life.
Here are a few simple and helpful tips as you begin:
- Read it daily– Begin each morning or evening by slowly reading Psalm 1 out loud. Hearing the words helps them sink deeper.
- Break it down– Don’t try to memorize all at once. Take one verse or even a phrase at a time. Once it’s familiar, add the next. Remember, one verse a week and we will be amazed how we have it in our hearts in 6 weeks!
- Write it out– Keep a notecard, journal page, or phone note handy. Writing engages your memory in a new way.
- Repeat and review– Recite Psalm 1 when driving, walking, or doing chores. Repetition is key to long-term memory.
- Pray it in– Turn the words of the psalm into a prayer. When Scripture becomes prayer, it moves from our heads into our hearts.
Psalm 1 paints a picture of a tree planted by streams of water—strong, fruitful, and enduring. That’s what happens when we root ourselves in God’s Word. May this practice together lead us to delight in the Lord and grow strong in Him.- JC Neely
